Interview with the Author of Slaying Your Giants

Hendrickson Publishers interviewed Kent Crockett about his newly released book Slaying Your Giants...

Slaying Your Giants by Kent Crockett

What should the reader know before diving in to Slaying Your Giants?
Be prepared to do whatever it takes to defeat the invisible giants that are attacking you. You will never live victoriously if you only read about how to solve a problem and aren’t willing to apply the information to your life.

What do you hope your readers will learn from your book?
I want readers to discover something new from the Scriptures that they hadn’t thought about before. I want them to understand that God’s Word provides the answers to the problems they face every day.

What inspired you to help others “slay their giants”?
I’ve had to fight all these giants myself. Now I want to teach others how to defeat them. Soldiers in the military are trained by those who are experienced on the battlefield. Believers can learn from those who are experienced in spiritual warfare.

What is one “giant” in your life that you have struggled to slay? Did you ever conquer it?
I’ve had to fight the Unforgiveness giant more than once. In this chapter I share some personal circumstances and how I conquered those difficult times. I believe that Unforgiveness is the giant that gives people the most trouble.

Which section of your book did you enjoy writing the most? Why was it your favorite?
I enjoyed writing the chapter on the Pessimism giant the most. I had fun writing “A Pessimist’s Commentary on Psalm 23, by Ima Whiner” because I can envision people laughing as they read it. Also, one of my favorite true stories is the one about the man who found diamonds in the sewer.

Which chapter was the most challenging to write? Why was it difficult?
The chapter on the Rejection giant was the most challenging because rejection is such a painful experience. However, one of my favorite sayings is “Man’s rejection can be God’s direction” because the Lord uses hateful people to get us to a better place, just like he did with Joseph in the Old Testament.

Did you ever question or doubt yourself during the writing process? If so, what did you do to overcome it?
I didn’t question myself but I did ask myself, “How can I write this to ensure the reader gets it?” I rewrote every chapter dozens of times until it finally felt right. I believe writing is like chiseling a statue: the more you chip away at it, the better it looks.

What advice would you give someone who is about to go “slay their giant”?
You must depend on the Lord and be determined to win the battle. A boxer who climbs in the ring and doesn’t believe he will win will lose every time. David knew he would defeat Goliath because he understood the Lord was with him and would give him the victory.

What works can we expect from you in the future?
I’m currently writing a book for Hendrickson Publishers called If God Knows My Needs, Why Should I Pray? This book will describe a different approach to prayer. I will clarify how prayer works, and that many things will not happen in our lives unless we pray. The book will be published in May 2016.

  1. This looks like an excellent book. I recently completed treatment for an illness that presented many “giants” during the year-long process. I personally developed a number of new techniques to help myself slay the “giants” that were sometimes relentless in trying to oppress and conquer my body, soul, and spirit, so I am eager to add to my arsenal as I move forward.
